Texas Turkey Hunting
Ranches, Outfitters, Information

Texas Turkey Hunting...what a great hunting sport. In a large state full of quality turkey, and superior hunting real estate, it doesn't get any better. The scenery and landscapes cannot be beat.

Turkey hunting has become much more popular in recent years due to the widespread acceptance of spring gobbler season by hunters and landowners alike.

Spring turkey hunting season is a geat challenge made so by trying to call in gobblers to a close range. Also, there isn't much hunting available in the spring of the year, so it is a great fix for the itchy trigger finger.

Texas has over 600,000 Rio Grande turkeys making your chances of success very real. This along with the liberal bag limits in Texas makes Texas turkey hunting the absolute best.

Turkey Facts

There are only two species of wild Turkey in the world (Meleagris gallopavo, and Meleagris ocellata). Don’t let these words bother you they are the scientific names. Us hunters will just use “North American Turkey” which is equal to the Meleagris gallopavo.

There are five sub-species of Wild Turkeys in the United States (Eastern, Osceola, Rio Grande, Merriam’s, and Gould’s).

The primary turkey for Texas is the "Rio Grande" species. In Far East Texas there are some Eastern Turkeys and a special season just for them. In the mountain regions of West Texas may be found some Merriam’s Turkey. But again, the primary hunting Turkey for Texas is the Rio Grande sub-species.

If you have been around wild turkeys any at all, you know that they see everything. They have excellent vision! This makes Texas turkey hunting hunting a challenge. The manner in which their eyes are positioned on their head give them a 360-degree field of vision. They don’t see well at night and for this reason they like to be on the roost (generally in a tall tree) before dark. This protects them from predators.

Turkeys can run up to 25 miles-per-hour and can fly 55 mph!

Male turkeys are generally larger than the females. Males will grow to about 20 pounds when mature and females around 10-12 pounds. The males are called “gobblers” when they are mature. When they are young, they are called “jakes”. Compare it to “men” and “boys” with us humans.

The males will have spurs and beards, but keep in mind that 10-20 percent of hens will have beards also!

If you are trying to learn to call turkeys, I suggest you find some recorded calls and try to copy them. Pay close attention to the rhythm and pitches. Calling turkeys is truly an art and requires much practice and patience.
